California teen found dead in her home, older brother is suspect

A 13-year-old California girl was found dead in her bedroom and police say her 14-year-old brother is the lone suspect.

Ashley Wood was discovered by her mother after suffering a blunt force injury to her head, police said. Neighbors called 911 after they heard Wood's mother screaming for help, FOX station KTXL reported.

"Words cannot adequately express our deep sorrow for all involved," police chief Ron Lawrence said in a statement.

Wood was described as a talented gymnast and wrote in her elementary school year book that in 10 years, she "will be in the Olympics doing gymnastics."
Her brother, whose name was not released because he is a minor, tried to flee the scene and was found in a field about a mile from their Rocklin, Calif. home about 40 minutes after cops arrived Tuesday morning.

Wood's brother was taken into custody and placed in a juvenile detention facility. California law states he may be able to be tried as an adult, The Sacramento Bee reported.

No motive for the killing has been found, and police say they are not releasing information about the weapon used.

Police found "multiple crime scenes" in the home and may have found evidence in the bedroom, living room and under the house, NBC station KCRA-TV reported.
