Mother of Shannan Gilbert found dead, younger daughter charged

The upstate New York mother of one of the sex workers found dead on Gilgo Beach, was murdered inside her apartment—and her other daughter has been arrested for the slaying.

Mari Gilbert, who has led an effort to solve the mysterious murder of her daughter, Shannan Gilbert, was found killed in her Ellenville, N.Y. apartment Saturday afternoon.

Her younger daughter, Sarra, was charged in her murder and for criminal possession of a weapon.

Shannan Gilbert was a CraigsList escort who is believed to be the last known victim of at least 11 people slain by a Long Island serial killer, who is yet to be apprehended.

Shannan vanished in May 2010, near a stretch of Gilgo Beach where the murderer was later revealed to dump his bodies.The search for her remains led police to the grisly discovery of 10 other bodies, including several other sex workers, the toddler belonging to one of the women and a man dressed in woman's clothing.
