Zoe Saldana opens up on battle against an autoimmune disease

Actress Zoe Saldana was forced to revamp her "book of life" when it came to eating habits.

The "Star Trek" star has revealed she suffers from the autoimmune disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis — a condition she has witnessed affect her mother and sister.

"Your body doesn't have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection, so it's always inflamed," she explained to Net-a-Porter's The EDIT in a story published Thursday.

The disorder causes the immune system to attack the thyroid, which can affect hormone production.

"You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean," she continued.

The diagnosis led to a radical change in her diet and Saldana and her husband now eat gluten and dairy-free, which she described as "night to day."

The busy 38-year-old definitely needs her energy as she promotes "Star Trek Beyond," which hits theaters on Friday.

She's also set to work on three future "Avatar" films.
