Aussie athletes detained in Rio for tampering with accreditation

Nine Australian athletes have been detained by Brazilian police for allegedly altering their official accreditation to get into a Friday night basketball game, according to reports.

The competitors — including members of the cycling, rugby and rowing teams — were hauled off to a local police station, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The game — which pitted Australia against Serbia — ended in a loss for the Aussie team.

Australian Olympic Committee Chief Executive Fiona de Jong was on scene to help the would-be spectators as they were questioned at a station near Olympic Park.

The athletes’ names have not yet been released and it’s unclear whether they will face criminal charges.

The latest drama comes on the heals of a long, ever-changing saga involving American swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his teammates.

After the last swimming race, the four swimmers headed out for a night on the town. During a boozy binge, they trashed a local gas station — but Lochte claimed they’d been robbed.

The 32-year-old left the country before a judge ordered the seizure the swimmers’ passports.

Meanwhile, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were yanked off a flight home and questioned by cops, who recommended charging Lochte and Feigen with false reporting of a crime.

Friday, gold medalist Jimmy Feigen agreed to donate $10,800 to get back his passport and return home.

Already safely back on U.S. soil, Lochte took to Instagram Friday to apologize.

“This was a situation that could have and should have been avoided,” the four-time Olympian wrote.

“I accept responsibility for my role in this happening and have learned some valuable lessons.”
