A 23-year-old Long Island man accused of killing his mother was ordered held on $8 million bail Thursday after his “chilling” confession about how he drowned his mom in the family pool then hid her body, officials said Thursday.
Denis Cullen, Jr., was charged with murder in the second degree for killing Elizabeth Cullen, 63, behind their $1.8 million mansion in Cold Spring Harbor on Wednesday.
The two were arguing over Cullen not taking his medication when he killed her, officials said. It was not immediately known what the medication was for.
“This is a son who killed his mother, and the way he killed her, the way he describes, how it was done, is chilling,” Assistant District Attorney Robert Biancavilla said during a brief court appearance in Suffolk County court Thursday.
Cullen allegedly killed his mother about 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to court documents. The woman’s body wasn’t discovered until cops were asked to do a welfare check on the family home about 4 p.m. that afternoon.
Cullen confessed to the crime over several hours of questioning, according to Newsday.
“The argument escalated to the point where she had poked him,” Biancavilla said. “After she poked him, he put her in a headlock, walked her from the shallow end of the pool to the deep end of the pool, all the while she struggled. He said she struggled violently and he was surprised a woman of her stature could struggle as much as she did.”
After she died, Cullen, who is currently unemployed, took his mother out of the pool, put her body next to a shed and covered the body with a dinghy, Biancavilla explained, according to Newsday.
He then left the home and took the Long Island Rail Road to Manhattan, where he told his sister what he had done.
Cullen is due back in court on Aug. 23.
A call to Cullen’s attorney, Steve Fondulis, was not immediately returned.
