Cops found at least five people slaughtered inside a rural home near Mobile, Ala., after a survivor and her baby escaped the bloodbath and went to police.
The five victims were “brutally and viciously murdered” early Saturday morning, said Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich.
A 911 caller warned that a trespasser identified as Derrick Ryan Dearman was at the Jim Platt Road property at around midnight Friday, Mobile County Sheriff’s Capt. Paul Burch told the Daily News.
A police officer from Citronelle went to the home and searched for the trespasser, but the officer found no sign of 27-year-old Dearman and left, Burch said.
Hours later, the five people — including a pregnant woman — were found slain.
“It would be impossible to find somebody,” added Burch, noting that the home was located in a “heavily wooded area.”
A woman who witnessed the gruesome killings said the suspect kidnapped her but dropped off her and the 3-month-old infant while driving to Mississippi.
The woman and her baby are OK, police said. The unidentified woman managed to reach police in Citronelle just after 4 p.m. Saturday.
Authorities descended on the home and found one male victim in one room and the four other victims in another, Burch said.
Rich revealed that some of the victims had been shot while others had been killed with an unspecified weapon.
Dearman was later apprehended in Greene County, Miss., about 30 miles west of the crime scene, according to Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
He turned himself over to deputies in Green County and allegedly confessed to the killings.
He knew at least one of the five victims — all adults — who were found inside the home northwest of Mobile, according to a WALA-TV report.
Dearman, of Mississippi, faces six counts of capital murder. One female victim was reportedly pregnant, the Mobile television station reported.
Dearman was also wanted out of Mobile County on an outstanding arrest warrant for robbery, police said.
Neighbors told the TV station a brother and sister, and their families, lived at the home along Jim Platt Road.
