Toronto man charged with murder for crossbow killings

A Toronto man once arrested for a nine-month-long string of bank heists now faces murder charges for his alleged crossbow rampage through a suburban neighborhood.

Brett Ryan, 35, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the grisly Thursday massacre in Scarborough, part of Eastern Toronto, CBC News reported. Police said he killed three people
and injured a fourth with the hunting weapon.

Ryan, once known as the city's “Fake Beard Bandit,” was charged with 29 counts of robbery in 2008 for a series of bank stick-ups.

Police said the then-27-year-old robbed 14 Toronto banks over nine months. Each time, he disguised himself with a fake beard, CTV News reported at the time.

While he was arrested and charged for the robberies in June 2008, it’s unclear if he was convicted.

Officers rushed to the scene around 1 p.m. Thursday after an emergency caller reported a stabbing in the area.

When they arrived, they found three slain victims: Two still had bolts — arrow-like projectiles fired by a crossbow — still lodged in their bodies, while the third had bolt wounds.

Police have not released the names of the victims, and officials have not detailed a possible motive in the brutal killings.

"We don't have any idea with regards to why this may have happened," Toronto police spokesman David Hopkinson said.
