Mom of teen shot dead during J’Ouvert asked him to stay home

The mother of 17-year-old Tyreke Borel said through tears Monday that she’d cautioned her son to stay home for J’Ouvert, but the teen had insisted on joining the revelry where he was shot and killed.

"He was just a lovely child who wanted to enjoy the Labor Day. I told him to be safe. But he's 17. He didn't want to stay home,” said Alima St. Clair at her Flatbush apartment.

She said police told her Borel was sitting on a bench alone at Flatbush and Empire Blvd. around 3:45 a.m. when he was shot. Police believe he was not the intended target.

Only 30 minutes later and a block away, Tiarah Poyau, 22, was shot dead in a separate incident, police said.

Borel, the oldest of three children, had lived in New York for four years. He will be buried in his native Trinidad, St. Clair said. The city medical examiner had yet to release his body.

"I just want my Tyreke,” St. Clair said, leaning her head against a wall and crying.

“I'm just trying to sort out everything.”
Borel’s Facebook page was flooded with condolences from many of his classmates at Boys and Girls High School.

“I can't believe this sleep easy Ty we love you ...I can't believe this I'm glad I'm one of the last people u saw and we had a calm convo lastnight,” one friend wrote. “I can't wait to meet you again ...nothing but laugh around you.”

A woman who identified herself as her cousin shared her grief online.

“I feel so helpless. The most I can do is just remember all the times he was happy and smiling,” she wrote.

“Ty was loved by everyone and he always made people smile and he had a huge heart.”
