1. Props to the Real-Life Marcia Clark
Sarah Paulson brought Marcia Clark as her date to the awards show. Paulson, 41, portrayed the prosecutor in the The People v. O.J. Simpson: America Crime Story, for which she won Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie during which Kimmel’s opening monologue Clark, 63, took his jokes while sitting in the audience.
While drawing attention to Paulson’s guest, Kimmel joked: “Because everyone in L.A. knows, if you want to win, sit next to Marcia Clark.”
“Hi, Marcia. This must be strange for you, right?” he added while addressing the prosecutor who played a key part in O.J. Simpson’s infamous murder trial. “Are you rooting for O.J. to win this time?”
2. Taylor Swift’s Exes Tom Hiddleston and John Mayer Almost Crossed Paths
Taylor Swift’s most recent ex-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston appeared alongside Quantico’s Priyanka Chopra to present the Emmy for Best Directing in a Limited Series. After giving colleague The Night Manager’s Susanne Bier the award, the Thor actor, 35, exited the stage as cameras panned to John Mayer, another of Swift’s exes, who was jamming out on a guitar in the orchestra pit.
3. Leslie Jones Jokes About Her Hacking Scandal and Twitter Attacks
The Ghostbusters actress had the last laugh about her recent hacking scandal and Twitter attacks. During the awards show, Jones, 49, appeared on stage with representatives from Ernst & Young, the accounting firm that protects the Emmys voting results.
"Y'all protecting something nobody is trying to steal," Jones told the reps. "Don’t nobody want to know about boring Emmy secrets. But since you good at keeping things safe, I got a job for you: My Twitter account. Put that in the vault, please.”
"Y'all using your skills to protect best voiceover on a French sitcom. Meanwhile I'm butt naked on CNN," Jones joked, referring to the nude images that were posted to her hacked website last month. "I just wanted to feel beautiful y'all. Can a sister feel beautiful?"
4 Julia Louis-Dreyfus Reveals Her Dad Died
While accepting her fifth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus broke down in tears, revealing that her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, had died two days ago.
“I’d like to dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday,” the actress said while shaking and trying to hold back tears. “I’m so glad that he liked Veep, because his opinion was the one that really mattered."
5. Jimmy Kimmel and ‘Stranger Things’ Cast Feed the Audience
Kimmel enlisted the help of his mother to make bagged snacks for the audience. The host then had the adorable cast of Netflix’s Stranger Things hand out the meals, which consisted of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apples, cookies and juice boxes.
6. Matt Damon Keeps His Feud Alive With Jimmy Kimmel
It lives on! Buddies Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel kept their hilarious feud alive during the telecast. The Jason Bourne actor, 45, appeared onstage during the awards show to mock host Kimmel’s Emmy loss. The late-night talk show host lost the award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series to Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.
“I missed the last category, did you win?” Damon jokingly asked Kimmel, 48. "That's a bummer,” Damon added after the late-night host informed him that Oliver took home the award. "It makes a lot of sense but you must be really bummed out.”
7. Larry David Perfectly Presents His First Emmy
"Look at this, I'm presenting! I'm a … I’m a presenter,” David, 69, said while presenting the award for Best Comedy Series. "They called me a few weeks ago and asked me to do this and I've never presented before," David explained before going into a hilarious explanation of how he could pull off the job.
"I'm grossly incompetent at most things but I'm thinking, ‘How hard could it be?’ It requires three skills: You have to be able to open an envelope, read a few words and most importantly, act like you're interested,” the comedian joked. "Believe me, I know how to act like I'm interested. Nobody feigns interest like me: Tell me more about your niece. You say she likes tap-dancing? Oh that's fascinating!"
