Cops have arrested a 16-year-old boy for fatally shooting a Brooklyn dad who tried to claim back his son’s stolen baseball cap, officials said Friday.
Adonis Barnett is accused of pulling a gun out of his backpack and blasting away at Cummings, hitting the 38-year-old dad in the back of the head.
Cummings was trying to get his son’s stolen Don C Oakland Raider’s cap back from Barnett and his friends when the teen started shooting, officials said.
The lambskin cap with a snakeskin bill sells on eBay for up to $200 and elsewhere online for more than $400.
Barnett, wearing orange basketball shorts and a white T-shirt, said nothing in Brooklyn Criminal Court Friday afternoon as a judge ordered him held without bail.
The lanky, baby-faced Erasmus High School student is charged with murder and weapons possession for the exchange that led to 38-year-old Gerald Cummings death.
He occasionally looked back to his family and friends, who sat in the gallery to support him.
“Hold your head up bro. That's a fact," said one of Barnett's supporters who later declined to comment outside of court.
Cummings’ son, Gerald Sealey, 17, was robbed of his pricey cap on July 30, police said.
Sealey was playing basketball outside Public School 6 in Flatbush when Romel Baptiste, 16, and two others approached him and stole his headgear. Police said the trio roughed up Sealey and tried to steal his cell phone.
On Aug. 3, Sealey was playing basketball at the same courts when he saw Baptiste — sporting his cherished cap. Barnett and another teen were with him.
Sealey called his dad, who came to the basketball court and snatched the hat off Baptiste’s head, sources said.
Members of the NYPD’s Fugitive Task Force found Barnett on Thursday after he was identified through his street name “Don Spice.”
It was Barnett’s first arrest, police said.
The teen denies any involvement in the killing, Barnett’s attorney Christopher Hoyt said.
