DA won't investigate Justin Timberlake's voting booth selfie
Justin Timberlake couldn't stop the feeling that he had to take a selfie while voting for the next president of the United States.
The pop star may have broken a Tennessee state law while snapping a ballot selfie in an effort to encourage his 37 million followers to vote on Monday, but the Shelby County District Attorney won't be pressing charges.
Timberlake, 35 — whose hometown is Memphis, Tenn. — traveled more than 1,700 miles from his current home of Los Angeles to take advantage of early voting.
"Hey! You! Yeah, YOU! I just flew from LA to Memphis to #rockthevote !!! No excuses, my good people! There could be early voting in your town too," he wrote, along with a photo of himself and his covered up ballot.
"If not, November 8th! Choose to have a voice! If you don't, then we can't HEAR YOU! Get out and VOTE! #excerciseyourrighttovote."
Last year, Tenn. Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill that prohibited photos or videos inside polling locations, but granted the use of phones for "informational purposes to assist the voter in making election decisions."
The DA's office, however, will not be pursuing an investigation.
"The statement released earlier today by my office regarding Justin Timberlake and an investigation was incorrect and was released without my knowledge,” Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said in a statement to KVVU, the local Fox affiliate. “I am out of town at a conference. No one in our office is currently investigating this matter nor will we be using our limited resources to do so."
An official from the election's board where the singer voted said Timberlake should be commended for encouraging people to get out and vote — not prosecuted, according to TMZ.
The law was created to mainly prevent voter fraud or intimidation and from revealing confidential information.
The "Can't Stop the Feeling" singer and his wife, actress Jessica Biel, 34, are outspoken Hillary Clinton supporters, who even held a Hollywood fundraiser for the Democratic nominee back in August when pal Leonardo DiCaprio could no longer host the event.
